Onimusha: Way of the Sword is arriving earlier than expected. Capcom announced that the next entry in the classic action series will now launch on September 4, 2026, across PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
The game was previously expected later in September, but Capcom is now moving the release date forward by several weeks. That means players will get to step into its dark fantasy version of Edo-period Kyoto sooner than planned.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword Preorders are Live
Preorders for Onimusha: Way of the Sword are available now across its supported platforms. Capcom is offering Standard, Deluxe, and Premium Deluxe editions, with Early Adopter Bonuses available for players who secure the game before September 24.
Capcom has not made those bonuses the whole pitch, though. The bigger news is the date change, since September 2026 is already shaping up to be packed with major releases. Moving Onimusha earlier gives the game more room to stand out before the late-month rush.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword Demo is Available Now
A demo for Onimusha: Way of the Sword is also available now on the PlayStation Store, Xbox Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store.
The demo gives players an early slice of the game’s swordplay and combat systems. Players who keep save data from the demo can claim a Kubi Akari charm as a bonus when the full game launches on September 4.
That is a nice touch for anyone who wants to test the combat before committing to a preorder. It also gives longtime Onimusha fans a better feel for how Capcom is modernizing the series without losing its identity.
What is Onimusha: Way of the Sword?
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is the first new entry in the Onimusha series in 20 years.
The game follows Miyamoto Musashi, a samurai armed with a mystical Oni Gauntlet, as he battles demons invading Edo-period Kyoto. Capcom says the game brings back signature Onimusha mechanics like Issen and Soul Absorption, while building them into a faster modern swordplay system.
That mix is the real hook. Onimusha was never just another samurai action game. Its best moments came from timing, tension, demon-slaying style, and that constant push to risk a perfect counter instead of button-mashing through another fight.
Now, players will get to see whether Way of the Sword can bring that formula back for a new generation.
