TFT Patch 17.8 Preview Nerfs Akali and Samira, Adds Brawler Gnar

Riot’s latest rundown targets several popular Space Gods strategies while opening new options for Gnar, Morgana, and Psionic boards.

Riot Games has released its first rundown for TFT Patch 17.8, giving players an early look at the next Space Gods balance update.

The written patch notes are not available yet, so some values may change before the update reaches live servers. Still, the preview outlines several important champion nerfs, trait additions, item adjustments, and Augment changes worth preparing for.

Editor’s note: This article is based on Riot’s official Patch 17.8 rundown and preliminary preview data. It will be updated when Riot releases the complete written notes.

When Does TFT Patch 17.8 Come Out?

TFT Patch 17.8 Rundown

TFT Patch 17.8 is currently scheduled to release on July 29, 2026.

It follows Patch 17.7, which added Timebreaker to Shen, turned Vex into a Stargazer, and lowered Anima’s highest breakpoint. Patch 17.8 appears focused on correcting some of the strongest resulting boards while giving underused champions and items another chance before the next set arrives.

Akali and Samira Are Getting Nerfed

Two of the largest champion nerfs currently listed for Patch 17.8 affect Akali and Samira.

Akali’s N.O.V.A. Strike Loses Damage

Akali’s regular ability remains unchanged in the current preview. However, the bleed applied by her N.O.V.A. Strike deals less damage at most star levels.

The adjustment targets the global damage created when Akali activates as the selected N.O.V.A. Striker. Akali reroll boards have become one of the most reliable options in Patch 17.7, especially when paired with Jax and the five-unit N.O.V.A. breakpoint.

The nerf should reduce her ability to soften an entire enemy board before her regular kunai attacks finish the job.

Samira Loses Passive Damage and Crowd Control

Samira’s passive attack triggered by enemy knock-ups is also being weakened. Its damage drops across all three standard star levels.

Her own ability will continue to knock up its target, but the crowd-control duration is being reduced from one second to 0.75 seconds.

The active portion of her spell keeps its listed damage. Therefore, the change focuses more on Samira’s repeated passive shots and her ability to keep enemies disrupted.

Gnar Becomes a Brawler

Gnar will gain the Brawler trait in TFT Patch 17.8.

This gives him another frontline connection and should make him easier to place inside boards that already use Brawlers such as Maokai, Urgot, or other high-Health units.

The extra trait could be especially useful in Meeple and economy-focused Gnar boards. Instead of functioning mainly as a trait bridge or late-game utility unit, he can now contribute directly to a larger Health breakpoint.

Morgana Joins the Conduit Trait

Morgana is becoming a Conduit, giving her another potential role beyond frontline support and transformation tank.

Her starting Mana increases, although her total Mana requirement also goes up. That means Morgana should cast her first ability earlier without necessarily repeating it more frequently throughout the entire fight.

The Health gained during her transformation is being lowered slightly. However, Conduit access should help her generate more Mana through compatible boards and items.

The five-Conduit breakpoint is receiving a small teamwide Mana regeneration nerf, likely to account for Morgana joining the roster.

Miss Fortune, Riven, and Twisted Fate Receive Buffs

Several damage dealers are currently lined up for improvements.

Miss Fortune

Both Miss Fortune ability variations gain additional damage.

Her line attack deals more damage at every standard star level. Meanwhile, the alternate channeling ability receives stronger damage per second.

These buffs should improve Miss Fortune regardless of which version appears through her trait or game mechanic.

Riven

Riven’s standard slash and every-third-cast energy wave are both being strengthened.

Her Shield and passive attack damage remain unchanged in the preview. Therefore, the buff concentrates on the active portions of her ability and should make offensive Riven builds more rewarding.

Twisted Fate

Twisted Fate’s maximum card damage is increasing while the lower end of his random damage range remains the same.

High rolls should hit harder, but unlucky card draws will not receive the same improvement. His three-star gold-generation effect also remains intact.

Diana Gets Faster Casts but Smaller Shields

Diana’s maximum Mana is dropping, allowing her to cast more often.

However, her Shield is being reduced at every standard star level. Her passive attack damage and rotating-orb damage currently remain unchanged.

This looks like a shift away from Diana surviving through one large Shield. Instead, she should cycle through her ability more frequently and rely on repeated casts during longer fights.

Briar and Zed Receive Direct Buffs

Briar’s base Attack Damage is increasing. The change should improve both her regular attacks and any ability scaling connected to her base damage.

Zed’s clones will also retain more maximum Health at one and two stars. His three-star value remains unchanged in the current preview.

The clone still inherits Zed’s items, stats, current Health, and increased Mana requirement. However, its improved durability should give it more time to attack and cast before being removed.

Psionic Items Are Being Rebalanced

Patch 17.8 includes a sizeable pass on the special items connected to Psionic champions.

Psionic Item Buffs

The current preview includes improvements for:

  • Biomatter Preserver: More Health and stronger healing at four Psionic
  • Drone Uplink: More repeated damage from the additional Psionic drone
  • Malware Matrix: Stronger cleave damage and more Damage Amp
  • Target-Lock Optics: More Attack Damage or Ability Power, plus stronger healing after a target dies

These adjustments should make the specialized items more competitive against general-purpose options.

Psionic Item Nerfs

Other items are being pulled back:

  • Iceblast Armor: Smaller Shields, a shorter stun, and reduced duration
  • Lioness’s Lament: Less Armor, Magic Resistance, and stolen defenses
  • The Annihilator: Lower Ability Power and Mana regeneration
  • Horizon Focus: Removed from the current item pool

Malware Matrix also has a longer cooldown on its repeated ability-damage effect, despite receiving buffs elsewhere.

Several Augments Are Changing

Cosmic Restart will grant more free shop rerolls after selling the player’s board and bench. The current value rises from eight rerolls to 15, making the risky reset much easier to recover from.

Just Hit can now appear at each standard Augment selection point. Know Your Enemy is also being reclassified as a combat Augment.

Critical Success is listed for removal.

Ahri Gets New Prosperity Blessings

Ahri is receiving two new Space God Blessings based on interest income.

Prosperity permanently grants Health to one champion, then adds more Health whenever the player earns interest. Prosperity+ begins with a larger Health bonus and provides more growth from each interest payment.

The standard version can appear from Stages 2 through 5. The upgraded version is currently limited to Stages 3 through 5.

These Blessings should reward players who maintain strong economy without forcing them into a traditional cashout trait.

Ekko Can No Longer Offer a Spatula

Ekko’s Spatula reward is being removed from the currently listed Space God options.

That should make trait-chasing through Ekko less reliable. Players will need to find Emblems through other Augments, rewards, or carousel opportunities instead.

What TFT Patch 17.8 Could Change in the Meta

Akali and Samira appear to be the clearest losers from the early preview. Both remain usable, but their boards should have less reliable damage and crowd control.

Gnar gaining Brawler may create new frontline combinations, while Morgana joining Conduit could support more flexible AP and Mana-focused boards. Miss Fortune and Riven also have a better chance of becoming primary carries instead of secondary damage sources.

The Psionic item overhaul may produce the biggest adjustment for players who frequently build around the trait. Several niche options are becoming stronger, while some of the safest defensive choices are being reduced.

Riot has not released the full TFT Patch 17.8 notes yet. Exact numbers, bug fixes, and late balance changes may still appear before the update goes live.
