How to Play Halo Campaign Evolved in Third Person

The Perspective Skull lets you play the rebuilt campaign from behind Master Chief, but you must find it before enabling the new camera.

Third-person mode is one of the biggest additions to Halo: Campaign Evolved, but the game does not give you immediate access to it. You must unlock the alternate camera during the campaign before using it in later missions and replays.

Fortunately, you can gain access early without completing the entire story. The steps below explain where to find the required unlock and how to activate third-person mode from the campaign menu.

Where to Find the Perspective Skull

To play Halo: Campaign Evolved in third person, collect the Perspective Skull during The Pillar of Autumn. You can then enable the Skull before launching a campaign mission or rally point.

The Perspective Skull changes the regular first-person camera to an over-the-shoulder view. It also lets you see Master Chief’s full armor and weapon skin customizations during regular combat instead of only while driving vehicles or using turrets.

The Perspective Skull appears near the end of The Pillar of Autumn, shortly after Master Chief meets Captain Keyes on the bridge.

Follow these steps to find it:

  1. Play The Pillar of Autumn until you reach the bridge.
  2. Watch the cutscene with Captain Keyes and Cortana.
  3. Once you regain control, turn around and re-enter the bridge.
  4. Walk past Captain Keyes toward the front windows.
  5. Approach the two crew members sitting at the pilot stations.
  6. Drop into the recessed area beneath the pilots.
  7. Collect the Perspective Skull from the floor near the ladder.

The Skull sits below the cockpit stations rather than somewhere along the route leading away from the bridge. Therefore, do not follow the mission marker after receiving the Magnum until you have collected it.

This is also the same Obseravtion Pen used to unlock the This is My Ship Now achievement.

How to Return After Completing the Mission

You do not need to replay the entire opening mission if you missed the Skull.

Load The Pillar of Autumn from Rally Point Bravo. This checkpoint places Master Chief near the bridge after the Captain Keyes scene. From there, return to the cockpit and drop beneath the pilots.

How to Turn on Third-Person Mode

After collecting the Skull, return to the campaign menu and select the mission or rally point you want to play.

Open the Skull selection screen, activate Perspective, and then launch the mission. Halo Studios lists its effect as changing the player camera to third person.

Because Perspective is a Skull modifier, you select it before entering the mission. It is not a regular camera option found in the gameplay settings.

You can combine Perspective with other unlocked Skulls. However, stacking several modifiers may dramatically change enemy behavior, weapons, visibility, and difficulty.

Does Third Person Work for the Whole Campaign?

The Perspective Skull can remain active throughout the main campaign and the three Operation: Meteorite missions. Halo Studios has also released footage of The Silent Cartographer played entirely from the third-person camera.

Most combat stays in third person. However, weapons with magnified sights can move into a first-person aiming view when you zoom, making long-range shots easier to line up.

The Skull also works during co-op. Halo Support confirms that players with Perspective enabled remain in third person and can see their full customized Spartan during gameplay.

Can You Play in Third Person From the Start?

You cannot enable third-person mode before finding the Perspective Skull. Halo Studios confirmed that players must first locate it in one of the campaign missions. Fortunately, it appears in the opening level, so you can unlock it before spending much time on Alpha Halo.

Once you have collected it, the Skull remains unlocked for future missions and replays. That makes it easy to finish The Pillar of Autumn normally and then replay the campaign from behind Master Chief.
