Halo: Campaign Evolved includes a secret ending for players who meet a specific campaign requirement. The additional scene appears after the final mission, although completing the story normally does not guarantee that it will play.

Halo: Campaign Evolved Secret Ending Requirements
To unlock the Halo: Campaign Evolved secret ending, complete the main campaign on Legendary difficulty. The additional scene plays at the end of The Maw after the campaign’s regular conclusion.
You do not need to complete LASO or activate every Skull. Legendary is the highest standard difficulty, while LASO is a separate challenge that combines Legendary with 17 specific Skull modifiers.
Use these settings for the safest route to the bonus ending:
- Start the main campaign on Legendary
- Complete all ten main story missions
- Finish The Maw
- Continue watching after the regular ending begins
- Do not quit when the initial final scene ends
Difficulty is selected after choosing New Game from a campaign mode. Therefore, an Easy, Normal, or Heroic playthrough will not qualify as a Legendary completion.
The three Operation: Meteorite prequel missions are separate from the original ten-mission campaign. Current reports identify a Legendary clear of the main story as the secret-ending requirement, so the bonus missions should not be necessary.
Can You Change to Legendary During a Playthrough?
No. Halo: Campaign Evolved asks players to choose a difficulty when starting a New Game. It does not treat custom difficulty modifiers as a replacement for an actual Legendary campaign.
Therefore, players already completing the story on Easy should finish that run for collectibles, and mission progress. Afterward, start a separate Legendary campaign for the alternate ending.
You also do not need to attempt LASO. That mode adds several punishing Skull effects and has separate completion rewards. Legendary alone is enough based on the currently documented unlock requirement.
Does Co-Op Unlock the Secret Ending?
Halo: Campaign Evolved allows up to four players to complete the campaign through online co-op. Consoles also support two-player local split-screen.
Current reports do not describe the alternate ending as a solo-only reward.
For the safest result, make sure each player completes every main mission on Legendary and remains in the Fireteam through The Maw.
Halo: Campaign Evolved Secret Ending Explained

The alternate scene focuses on Sergeant Avery Johnson after Installation 04 begins to fall apart.
Johnson is relaxing on a makeshift beach setup while watching footage that recreates the joke Legendary ending from the original Halo: Combat Evolved. In that older scene, Johnson and an Elite stop fighting and embrace shortly before the ring explodes.
Campaign Evolved reframes the gag as something Johnson is watching inside the new scene. However, his break ends once he notices the Pillar of Autumn’s explosion and the destruction spreading across the ring.
A Pelican arrives to evacuate him. Before boarding, Johnson looks toward the camera and tells the player, “See you in the sequel.”
The scene gives Johnson another deliberately ridiculous escape from certain death. It also preserves the original game’s sense of humor rather than turning the Legendary reward into a serious lore dump.
Does the Secret Ending Confirm a Halo 2 Remake?
The final line has led to speculation that Halo Studios plans to remake Halo 2 next. However, the studio has not officially announced a Halo 2 remake.
“See you in the sequel” directly references Johnson’s return in Halo 2. It may also work as a tease for the next Campaign Evolved project, especially because the current game rebuilds Combat Evolved rather than simply remastering its graphics.
Still, the scene is not confirmation. Reports describing it as a Halo 2 remake hint are interpreting the joke, not citing an official announcement from Halo Studios.
For now, the safest reading is that Halo Studios wanted to reward Legendary players with a new spin on an old joke. If a second remake follows, Johnson can claim he warned everyone.
