The Minecraft Switch 2 free upgrade is available to players who already own a digital copy of Minecraft for the original Nintendo Switch. Mojang is offering the new Standard Edition at no additional cost in most regions ahead of its Oct. 27, 2026, launch.
However, the offer has a deadline, and not every existing owner qualifies for the same deal. Here’s what to know before purchasing another copy.
Who Qualifies for the Minecraft Switch 2 Free Upgrade?
Players who own the digital Nintendo Switch version of Minecraft can upgrade to the native Switch 2 Standard Edition for free in most regions.
However, Mojang lists three regional exceptions:
| Region | Upgrade Cost |
|---|---|
| Most regions, including the U.S. | Free |
| Japan | 100 yen |
| Taiwan | NT$30 |
| Thailand | 25 baht |
The offer runs through Jan. 31, 2027, giving players several months to claim it.
Additionally, eligible owners can purchase the Deluxe Collection or Ultimate Collection at discounted prices instead of choosing the free Standard Edition.
How to Claim the Minecraft Switch 2 Upgrade
The promotion is available exclusively through Nintendo eShop.
To claim the offer:
- Confirm that you own a digital copy of Minecraft for the original Nintendo Switch.
- Open Nintendo eShop and find the native Minecraft Nintendo Switch 2 edition.
- Check the available upgrade offer and its price.
- Select the Standard Edition or an eligible discounted edition.
- Complete the free checkout before the deadline.
Because regional prices vary, check the final amount before confirming.
What About Physical Nintendo Switch Owners?
The free Standard Edition offer specifically covers digital ownership.
However, Nintendo has confirmed a separate promotion for physical-copy owners.
Starting Oct. 27 at 9 a.m. Pacific, players can launch their original Switch version of Minecraft on Switch 2 to receive an in-game offer for a discounted Ultimate Collection.
This promotion also ends Jan. 31, 2027, at 9 a.m. Pacific.
What’s New in Minecraft on Switch 2?
The native version introduces Vibrant Visuals, bringing improved lighting, shadows and other graphical effects to Minecraft.
Additionally, the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack receives a visual overhaul. Players can explore its Nintendo-themed world with the enhanced graphics.
However, Vibrant Visuals won’t work during certain activities, including split-screen play.
Nintendo also confirms that players can carry over worlds from the original Switch version.
The game launches Oct. 27 in the U.S., with an Oct. 28 release in Japan.
