EA confirmed the BioWare closure on Oct. 21, 2026, announcing plans to shut down the studio and end early development on the next Mass Effect game.
The decision marks the end of more than three decades for the developer behind Dragon Age, Mass Effect and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
In its farewell announcement, BioWare thanked its developers and players while acknowledging the employees affected by the closure.
Why is the BioWare Closure Happening?
The closure comes as Electronic Arts restructures its development priorities and shifts resources toward fewer major projects.
According to EA’s announcement, a small team had continued working on the next Mass Effect. However, the publisher decided against moving forward with development.
As a result, EA will close BioWare and its Edmonton workspace.
The company also wants to concentrate on projects with stronger growth opportunities. Meanwhile, development will continue on Marvel’s Iron Man and the next Star Wars Jedi game.
EA also plans to bring Respawn and DICE together for a future shooter project.
What Happens to Mass Effect and Dragon Age?
For Mass Effect fans, the announcement ends years of anticipation surrounding the franchise’s next installment.
BioWare first teased the project in 2020. More recently, the studio reassured players that development continued and that EA remained committed to the series.
Now, that project has officially ended.
However, EA has not announced the permanent cancellation of the Mass Effect franchise. Another developer could potentially revisit the series, although the publisher has revealed no such plans.
Likewise, EA has not provided new information about Dragon Age’s future.
BioWare’s Legacy in RPGs
Founded in 1995, BioWare helped shape modern role-playing games through its focus on storytelling, player choices and character relationships.
Its catalog includes Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Dragon Age, Mass Effect and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
These games helped establish the studio’s reputation for memorable companions and decisions that could change how an adventure unfolded.
While the BioWare closure ends the studio’s development history, its influence remains visible throughout the RPG genre.
For now, EA has offered no replacement development plan for Mass Effect.
