Can you play GTA 6 offline is becoming a practical question as players compare editions, platforms, and download requirements. Rockstar has focused its current rollout on Jason and Lucia’s story, but the way players access that campaign still matters.
The answer is especially important for anyone with unreliable internet. It also affects players considering the boxed version, since GTA 6 will not use a traditional game disc.
Can You Play GTA 6 Without Internet?
Yes, the GTA 6 story campaign supports offline play on PS5.
PlayStation’s official store listing marks Grand Theft Auto VI as having offline play enabled for one player. Rockstar also describes GTA 6 as a single-player experience.
That means players should not need a constant internet connection while playing the main story. However, you will still need internet access to download and install the game.
Does GTA 6 Require an Internet Connection to Install?
Yes, GTA 6 will require an internet connection for the initial download.
Rockstar says the physical version contains a download code rather than a traditional game disc. Players can redeem that code and begin preloading on November 12, 2026.
Digital buyers will also need to download the game through the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store. Rockstar has not confirmed the final file size, so the installation could take time on a slower connection.
Our GTA 6 file size guide tracks the current storage information.
Can You Play the Boxed Version Offline?
You should be able to play the installed story campaign offline, but the boxed version still requires a download first.
The box does not contain a playable disc. It contains a code that unlocks the digital game. Therefore, buying a physical box will not help players who lack enough internet access to download GTA 6.
After installation, the PS5 listing says offline play is enabled. Players may also need to keep the console set as their primary system through PlayStation’s Console Sharing and Offline Play setting.
Does GTA 6 Need GTA+?
No. GTA+ is not required to play the GTA 6 story campaign.
Eligible digital preorders include one month of GTA+, but that bonus supports Rockstar’s existing GTA Online membership program. It does not turn the single-player campaign into a subscription game.
Rockstar has not announced a new GTA 6 Online mode yet. Our Will GTA 6 Have Online? guide explains what the company has and has not confirmed.
Can You Play GTA 6 Offline on Xbox?
Rockstar confirms GTA 6 for Xbox Series X|S and describes the game as a single-player experience. However, the Xbox listing does not provide the same clear “offline play enabled” label shown on PlayStation.
The story itself should not require a constant connection, but Xbox owners will still need internet access to download the game and any required updates. Microsoft account and home-console license settings may also affect offline access.
Will Updates Require Internet?
Yes. Patches, updates, and future downloadable content will require an internet connection.
That does not mean players must remain connected while exploring Leonida. It simply means an offline console cannot receive fixes or new content until it reconnects.
Grand Theft Auto VI launches November 19, 2026, for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
