If you’re asking what year does Fallout 76 take place, you’re not alone. The game is a prequel compared to the rest of the series, and because it’s a live service Fallout, the timeline can feel a little slippery depending on what content you’re playing. Below is the exact launch-year answer, plus how later story updates adjust the in-game calendar.
When Does Fallout 76 Take Place?
Fallout 76 is set in the year 2102, with players leaving Vault 76 on Reclamation Day. More specifically, Bethesda’s own official reveal frames it as “Reclamation Day, 2102,” which is 25 years after the Great War (2077).
Reclamation Day is the moment Vault 76 officially opens and its residents begin pushing out into Appalachia to rebuild and “reclaim” the wasteland. That’s why Fallout 76 is considered the earliest major entry on the Fallout timeline when you’re comparing it to games like Fallout 1, Fallout 3, New Vegas, and Fallout 4.
Why the In-Game Year Changes After Launch
Here’s the part that confuses a lot of players: Fallout 76’s live updates have moved the world forward. For example, Fallout 76: Wastelanders notably advanced the game’s in-world date, and Bethesda even pointed out that your Pip-Boy reflects the year shifting.
Here’s how each update changes the in-game year:
- Wastelanders update progressed the in-game year to 2103
- Steel Reign update progressed the in-game year to 2104
- Atlantic City Boardwalk Paradise update progressed the in-game year to 2105
