Gears of War: E-Day has four main Campaign difficulty levels: Casual, Normal, Hardcore, and Insane.
However, choosing a preset is not the end of the system. E-Day also lets players customize individual gameplay settings, giving you more control over how challenging the campaign feels.
For most players starting their first campaign, Normal is the best place to begin.
All Gears of War: E-Day Difficulty Levels

The four Campaign difficulties are:
| Difficulty | Best For |
|---|---|
| Casual | Story, exploration, and players new to Gears |
| Normal | Most first playthroughs |
| Hardcore | Experienced Gears players looking for a challenge |
| Insane | Players who want the hardest Campaign experience |
Casual
Casual is the most forgiving difficulty and is a good choice if you primarily want to experience the story or explore Kalona without getting stuck on difficult combat encounters.
It is also a sensible starting point for players completely new to Gears of War. E-Day introduces several movement changes, including sliding, jumping, climbing, new cover interactions, and more vertical combat spaces.
Normal
Normal is our recommended difficulty for a first playthrough.
Combat still punishes poor positioning, but you have enough room to experiment with weapons, Active Reloads, movement, Weapon Mods, and different approaches to encounters.
If you have played third-person shooters before but do not want every firefight turning into a checkpoint marathon, start here.
Hardcore
Hardcore significantly increases the pressure during combat and is better suited to experienced Gears players.
Cover becomes more important, mistakes become more expensive, and tougher enemy combinations require better positioning and weapon management.
If Normal feels too forgiving or you already understand how Gears combat works, Hardcore is the natural step up.
Insane
Insane is the highest Campaign difficulty.
This setting is designed for players who already understand E-Day’s combat systems and want encounters to punish mistakes aggressively.
It is also tied to Campaign challenge progress and achievements, making it the difficulty completionists will eventually need to tackle.
We would not recommend Insane for a blind first playthrough unless that type of challenge is specifically what you want.
Can You Customize Difficulty in Gears of War: E-Day?
Yes.
E-Day goes beyond the four presets by allowing you to adjust specific Campaign gameplay settings individually.
Changing some of these options can also change the difficulty tier displayed by the game. That means you can tune the experience rather than being completely locked into one preset.
This is especially useful if you enjoy tougher enemies but dislike one particular difficulty mechanic.
If you are working toward an achievement that requires a specific difficulty, pay attention to the difficulty tier shown after changing custom settings.
Can Co-op Players Use Different Difficulties?
Yes.
Players in Campaign co-op can choose their difficulty independently.
That means one player can use a more forgiving setting while another plays at a higher difficulty without forcing the entire group onto the same preset.
E-Day supports up to four players online in Campaign, so this is particularly useful for groups with different levels of Gears experience.
Which Difficulty Should You Choose?
For most players:
Choose Casual if you mainly care about the story and exploration.
Choose Normal if this is your first playthrough and you want the intended balance between challenge and progression.
Choose Hardcore if you are comfortable with Gears combat and want encounters to demand better positioning and execution.
Choose Insane if you are specifically looking for the hardest Campaign experience or completing its related challenges.
There is little reason to make your first playthrough miserable just because you have played previous Gears games. E-Day changes movement, cover, weapons, enemy behavior, and encounter design enough that Normal is still a useful place to learn how everything fits together.
Does Difficulty Change How Long Gears of War: E-Day Takes?
It can.
Repeated checkpoints and longer combat encounters can make Hardcore and Insane runs take considerably longer than a Normal playthrough.
Meanwhile, exploration may have an even larger impact. Players hunting collectibles, Hard Cases, Supply Caches, and Secondary Objectives can spend hours away from the main objective regardless of difficulty.
