When Did Fallout 3 Come Out?

Fallout 3’s launch marked the series’ mainstream breakout, and the exact date helps place it in gaming history.

Fallout 3 is one of those games that still gets referenced constantly, whether you are talking about open-world RPG design, Bethesda-era Fallout lore, or that first step out of Vault 101. If you are pinning down the series’ history, we’ll break down when Fallout 3 came out, its reception, and why that release moment helped turn Fallout into the franchise it is today.

Fallout 3 came out on October 28, 2008, in North America (PC, PS3, and Xbox 360).

Many fans see Fallout 3 as the series’s big turning point. It pushed Fallout from a PC-first RPG into a mainstream open-world hit on consoles. That legacy is a big reason the “Fallout 3 remaster” rumors keep resurfacing.

It also set up the next heavy hitter fast. Fallout: New Vegas arrived just two years later. Players still compare them today: Fallout 3 nails the Bethesda-style open-world exploration, while New Vegas leans harder into role-play choices and faction depth.

Fallout 3 Launch Reception

Critics loved Fallout 3 at launch. Metacritic scored it at 91/100 on PC, 90/100 on PS3, and 93/100 on Xbox 360. The game also sold more than earlier Fallout titles in its first week, including spin-offs.

Fallout 3 built serious hype at E3, too. IGN named it Game of the Show at E3 2007. GameSpot awarded it Best Role-Playing Game at the same event. In 2008, IGN added more awards after the game’s next big showing, including Best Overall RPG, Best Overall Console Game, and Overall Game of the Show. The Game Critics Awards also gave it Best Role-Playing Game and Best of Show.

The Biggest Criticisms Over Time

Players have long debated the ending. Many felt it boxed them into a narrow idea of heroism and sacrifice. Some also disliked how the finale can praise radiation-immune companions as the “real” heroes, even though the Lone Wanderer did the heavy lifting to save Project Purity.

Bethesda writer Emil Pagliarulo later explained the team wanted sacrifice to matter. They also realized the limited options clashed with Fallout’s core identity. Broken Steel addressed this by expanding the ways the ending can play out.

Fallout 3 On PC Today

Fallout 3 can run rough on modern PCs. Some players report crashes or launch issues, depending on their setup. Because of that, many fans use Tale of Two Wastelands. It ports Fallout 3 into New Vegas and often improves stability for long sessions.
