TFT Set 16 Lore & Legends launches on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, on PC and mobile alongside patch 16.1. Once the update goes live, it will replace Set 15 as the main set in all standard queues. Be sure to finish your battle pass and any remaining ranked games before then.

New Unlockables Mechanic

The headline system for TFT Set 16 is Unlockable Champions. Lore & Legends keeps a base pool of 60 units, then adds 40 more that you earn mid game. Each unlockable champion comes with a unique condition. Some ask you to hit a trait breakpoint or field a specific region. Others want you to reach a high level with a certain board. Meet that requirement and the unit joins your shop for the rest of the game.

Unlockables also reward long term grinding. Many champions give you extra goals, like finishing top four with them to earn special prizes. The idea is simple: the more you explore the set, the more options you unlock for future games.

Regions, Traits, and Fan Favorite Combos

Set 16 revisits almost every major region in Runeterra. You will see lineups for Demacia, Noxus, Ionia, Piltover, Shurima, the Shadow Isles, and more. Each region brings a clear trait hook. Noxus leans on Atakhan, a giant boss that scales with your Noxian stars. Piltover lets you build inventions on the side of the board that fire after a delay. Shadow Isles squads grow stronger as fights drag on and fallen units feed your pool of souls.

Lore & Legends also leans into quirky one off units. Ornn forges powerful artifacts, Tahm Kench eats allies for stats, and Lucian plus Senna share a Soulbound tag. These champions sit at the center of their own mini comps and should create a lot of highlight games.

Early Tips for Your First Games

You do not need to memorize all 100 champions before you queue. Start by focusing on a couple of regions that you like from League. Let the game gently push you toward unlockable conditions instead of forcing them every match.

Quick day one tips:

  • Track the unlock popups and read the condition text once; chase them in later games.
  • Use early traits that give economy or rerolls to help hit awkward unlock conditions.
  • In ranked, play your strongest board first and treat unlocks as a bonus, not the whole plan.
  • Bookmark a Set 16 comp page or overlay so you can check trait breakpoints on the fly.
