One Piece Chapter 1188 spoilers are here, and “Wailing Void” puts Luffy in one of his roughest Elbaph fights yet. Chapter 1187 ended with Luffy rejecting Imu’s Joy Boy label and declaring himself the man who will become Pirate King.
Chapter 1188 answers that confidence with a much harsher reality. Luffy can hit Imu, dodge him, and keep the fight moving in classic Gear 5 fashion, but Imu is still on a different level. The chapter also brings Jinbei into the spotlight, frees Shuri, and ends with a brutal Crocodile-style stab.
These are unofficial spoilers for now, so some names, attack translations, and smaller details may change once the official English release goes live.

One Piece Chapter 1188 Spoilers and Full Summary
One Piece Chapter 1188 starts with Imu remembering Joy Boy. The chapter only shows the lower part of Joy Boy’s face while he laughs, but the expression looks a lot like Luffy’s.
Imu thinks about Joy Boy and says he is already dead. That line immediately separates Luffy from the legend Imu remembers. Luffy may resemble Joy Boy, but Imu does not see him as the same person.
The fight then resumes. Imu attacks Luffy, and Luffy dodges by moving his head out of the way. For a moment, it looks like Luffy has avoided the attack cleanly. Then Imu’s hand follows Luffy’s head and smacks him hard enough to send him crashing into the ground.
Luffy gets angry and tries to punch Imu back, but Imu dodges without much effort. The chapter makes the gap clear. Luffy is fighting back, but Imu is outclassing him.
Imu then uses Omen fire bombs to attack. Luffy runs away in a goofy, cartoon-like Gear 5 style, but the humor does not make Imu feel less dangerous. Luffy even reacts by calling the thing chasing him a demon.
Luffy answers with Gomu Gomu no Jet Gatling. He then transforms into a larger genie-like Gear 5 form. The exact attack name may need the official translation, but the spoilers describe the form as something like a Demon God or genie transformation.
In that form, Luffy tells Imu he saw what happened during the fight with Loki and understands the moves. He says Loki’s death will not be in vain, which immediately gets a reaction from Loki. Loki screams that he is still alive, and Luffy casually waves at him after realizing it.
Imu then turns the danger back toward Loki. He uses Omen fire again, and Ragnir stands in the way while shaking. Loki tells Ragnir to move, but Jinbei steps in before the attack can land.
Jinbei uses Fish-Man Karate to deflect Imu’s attack and protect Loki and Ragnir. Luffy is proud of Jinbei, while Loki complains that Jinbei is showing off. Ragnir, meanwhile, is extremely impressed.
Brook also tries to understand what they are dealing with. He says no one should be above the Holy Knights except the Five Elders, so he assumes this must be the captain of the Holy Knights. Brook does not know that Imu is the hidden king of the world, so he can only describe the World Government as a mysterious organization.
The melted ice also changes the situation nearby. Shuri is freed, and the others begin pulling her out. Imu appears surprised that Gunko could not break the ice. He calls out to Gunko, Princess Shuri, and Brook, which is striking because it shows Imu recognizes more people on the battlefield than expected. He also seems concerned about Gunko.
Luffy keeps pushing the fight and uses an attack called Gomu Gomu no Opening Bullet. Imu counters with fire again and marks Luffy’s beard while he is still in his genie-like form. Imu asks if Luffy saw what happened to Loki.
Luffy then transforms back into his normal form. Because the beard disappears with the form, the fire mark disappears too. Luffy runs from the chasing flame, avoiding the same kind of setup that hit Loki earlier.
Imu then pulls a sword from the eye-like shape on his back. The weapon is called the Void Sword. The forest around them withers, showing how destructive the attack is before it even lands.
Luffy is still acting loose and silly, but Imu looks disgusted. He tells Luffy that he knows Luffy is not Joy Boy. If Luffy were really Joy Boy, Imu says, he would not be this weak.
Then Imu closes the distance quickly, seemingly by using or replacing the position of the fire that had been chasing Luffy. Luffy gets stabbed, creating a visual callback to Crocodile impaling him back in Alabasta.
The chapter ends with Luffy badly wounded and Imu making it clear that he does not see Luffy as Joy Boy’s equal.
One Piece Chapter 1187 Recap
One Piece Chapter 1187 began with Luffy’s punch blowing Imu away. Loki was stunned by the hit, but Imu still managed to create a small Omen flame while being knocked back.
That flame landed on Loki and marked the spot where he had already been pierced. Imu followed with Grudge Sword, which stabbed Loki in the same wound and left him in terrible shape.
Luffy was also marked by Imu’s flame, but the fire landed on his jacket. He threw the jacket away, causing the sword attack to follow the jacket instead of his body.
The chapter also showed Nami, Jinbei, Usopp, and Franky trying to deal with Ragnir’s ice. Loki later crashed into the ice, and the impact helped melt it enough to start freeing Gunko.
Zoro had a short exchange with Sommers and dodged his attack easily. Sanji faced a much harder choice because children were in danger, but the monster threatening them was a woman. A flashback with Gaban pushed Sanji to think about pride, Luffy’s dream, and what it means to help make Luffy Pirate King.
The final page showed Luffy in Gear 5 facing Imu. Imu called him Joy Boy, but Luffy rejected the name and said he is Luffy, the man who will become the Pirate King.
What Imu’s Void Sword Means
The Void Sword is the most dangerous new detail in One Piece Chapter 1188.
Imu already showed that Omen fire can mark a target and set up a follow-up attack. Chapter 1188 takes that idea further. The fire chases Luffy, marks part of his Gear 5 body, and appears to help Imu close the distance for the final stab.
The withered forest also makes the sword feel different from a normal blade. The attack seems tied to decay, erasure, or some kind of draining power. That fits the name “Void” and makes Imu’s offense feel much more dangerous than simple fire or swordplay.
It also gives Luffy a problem that brute force may not solve. Gear 5 lets him fight in absurd ways, but Imu’s attacks can punish him even when he jokes around, changes shape, or tries to escape.
What the Joy Boy Flashback Means
The Joy Boy memory adds another layer to Imu’s reaction to Luffy.
Imu sees enough similarity to think about Joy Boy immediately. The laugh, the expression, and Luffy’s presence all bring the old enemy back to mind. However, Imu also insists that Joy Boy is dead and that Luffy is too weak to be him.
That insult matters because Luffy does not want to be Joy Boy anyway. He already rejected the name in Chapter 1187. He wants to be recognized as Luffy.
Still, Imu’s words raise the stakes. Luffy may carry Joy Boy’s power and spirit, but Chapter 1188 shows he has not reached the level needed to overwhelm Imu yet.

Where to Read One Piece Chapter 1188
You can read One Piece Chapter 1188 officially through MANGA Plus and VIZ’s Shonen Jump when the chapter releases.
Both platforms offer the official English release, which is the best way to follow the chapter and support the series.
Final Thoughts
One Piece Chapter 1188 makes Imu look terrifying without taking away Luffy’s personality. Luffy is still goofy, bold, and willing to rush straight into danger. The problem is that Imu can punish every mistake.
Jinbei gets a strong save, Loki is still alive, Shuri is free, and Brook starts to piece together how strange the World Government really is. However, the final image belongs to Imu and Luffy.
Imu does not see Luffy as Joy Boy. He sees him as a weaker echo of someone who died long ago. That makes the stab at the end hit harder because it is not just a physical wound. It is Imu’s way of saying Luffy is not ready yet.
